Yet, they fail to recognize that the mystery of the Eucharist, the Body of Christ in the Church is the center of the Real Presence. St. Thomas’ Summa is a good reference to introduce the laity and scholars to the role of suffering and death in the faith.
The Christian church in India is growing. At this moment in time it needs our sympathetic pity and concern to comfort the weak and those suffering in misfortune.
With regard to the growth of the Christian church in our nation, we humbly bear negative challenges, not failing to plow through whatever comes and raise mutual support for growth, helping to reach an encounter with the ‘Prince of Peace’.
Just next to the historic Rosario Cathedral, in the campus of St. Ursula Convent, Bolar, on the Hoige Bazar Road, Mangalore; The credit of starting ursuline counselling ministry in Mangalore Province and establishing a centre under the name ‘Sampoorna Counselling Centre’, in the year 2012, goes to Sr. Lenita D'Souza at the time she was the provincial superior. This facility was made possible in the wake of the return of Sr. Dr. Judith Lewis UFS, after successfully completing her research studies in St. Thomas University, Manila, Philippines. First, she providentially got an opportunity to be a lecturer of Psychology in St. Joseph's College, Bangalore (a renowned Jesuit institution, a University now). She rendered yeoman services there and set up a new Department of Psychology which has gone on to flourish. In the year 2018 she returned to Mangalore, Sr. Lilly Fernandes, General Councilor of the Congregation then, took initiative to upgrade the Centre by furnishing it well and giving it a professional profile. Sr. Dr Judith was able to double her effectiveness as the Director of the Centre from July 2018, and since then it has shown an ascending tempo and now running at full capacity very successfully contributing to needy folk.
'Sampoorna' is the common term for 'wholeness, complete' - from a psychological perspective, indicative of 'wholeness, a sense of good, complete and perfect emotional/ mental health and wellbeing'. It is a well known fact that people pay a lot of attention to physical health and mental/emotional health in our society is not viewed adequately, now in the twenty-first century with severe stress and strain causing widespread breakdown . In this context the Samporna counseling centre has a specific mission to fulfill, namely to propagate not only the awareness of the need for mental health but also to provide concrete support whenever people are tormented with psychological disorders.
Dr. Judith Lewis has over the ten years earned a name for herself as a Clinical Psychologist since she returned from Manila in 2012. During the last ten years she has not only attended international conferences in Taipei, Singapore, Malaysia, spain, Portugal and Berlin, as well as national psychological seminars, but also guided interns for MSc students of Psychology, volunteered as co-guide to research students, all under the umbrella of "Sampoorna Counselling Centre". She is now recognised, well known and appreciated as a qualified resource person for career guidance, aptitude tests and specialized psychological guidance to children, youth, married couples and families. All these activities keep the Centre totally engaged and occupied with an average of around 50 sessions per week.
Further, as a specialised extension of dynamic efforts contributing at large to the needed segments - Other, significant activity of the Centre supplement and amplify its extension programmes to other institutions with expert support. The scope of this activity is boundless and the Director is actively engaged in presenting herself as a resource person to the following Institution types : 1. Formation Houses and Religious Communities. 2. Educational Institutions (Schools and Colleges). 3. Social Work Centers. 4. Articles and Write-ups. : Regular contributor to the Online Digital “Dijiworld” web site (www.daijiworld.com) on relevant psychological topics in order to enlighten the public on mental/emotional health and psychological issues. Rakno Konkani Publications: Timely articles are published for Konkani language readers in order to give awareness on various psychological issues. The landmark achievement in media apostolate from the Sampoorna Counselling Centre is by the publication of a comprehensive book and guide, “The Pearls for Sound Living” authored by Sr. Dr. Judith Lewis and published by ATC Publications, which was released April 16, 2022. Meeting the requests for awareness and support is a vital ongoing contribution to take 'Sampoorna' care to new heights in the coming years by the grace and providence of the LORD Almighty.
India Post, Karnataka Circle, Bengaluru issued a Special Cover on National Sports Day - 2022, August 29, 2022 at Meghdoot Auditorium, Bengaluru GPO; to pay well deserved tribute to Hockey Queen late Elvera Britto (with Konkani roots of Mangalore) a former Indian women’s Hockey Team Captain and recipient of Arjuna Award in 1966; she passed away on 26th April 26, 2022. Sri. L K Dash, IPoS, Postmaster General Bengaluru HQ garaced the event. The Chief Guest Padma Shree M. P.Ganesh former Indian Hockey Captain and Coach , a Arjuna Awardee. Also, present on the dais were Guests of Honour, Former Hockey Players, the two sisters of Elvera Britto, Ms.Mae Britto & Ms. Rita Britto. An Interesting Video on the life achievements of late Elvera Britto was screened. The dignateries spoke on the contribution and qualities of the Arjuna Award Winner Elvera Britto and imporance of the National Sports Day - August 29, 2022.
Brief Citation : Elvera Britto was born and brought up in Bangalore. She was the 5th of 8 children, her parents Robert and Letitia Britto hailed from Mangalore. She had 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Having completed her education at St. Francis Xavier’s Girls’ High School , she became a School Teacher by Profession. She was involved in all Sports activities the Inter-School and Inter-Club matches , which were of a very high standard , Elvera excelled and proved to be outstanding in the Hockey arena.
The Mysore State Women’s Hockey Association formed a Team to participate in the Senior National Women’s Hockey Championship; for the first time . Elvera was chosen as its Captain and that was the start of a hockey career which brought laurels to Mysore State (now Karnataka) , winning the title for no less than 8 years in succession. Her skill at the game and strategy as Captain caused her to move from Club to State matches, then National to International Level. She captained the Indian Team as well , also at International level. Under her Captainship and with a band of zealous players, they won 95% of the matches. Her name has been etched in the name of Women’s Hockey and she was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1966 .
Elvera became President of the State Hockey Association and with her encouragement much talent emerged and no less than 2 Karnataka Players won the Arjuna Award. Later she became a Selector for the Indian Women’s Team and was appointed by the Union Government as the Govt. Nominee and Observer for Women’s Hockey. Hockey aside, Elvera was a multi-talented person. Her Oil-paintings from Sceneries to portraits, adorn the homes of her family members. She was well known for her Japanese/Ikebana Flower-arrangements and won the first prize every year. She won 7 first prizes , one year, and was presented with the Hombe Gowda Shield. She was an expert at Batik printing and even had an exhibition of her prints. She shared this talent at the Alliance Francaise by teaching this art of Batik printing. Her flair for Cake-making and cooking most appetizing dishes, was another thing much appreciated and relished.
Rarely in Sport , will you find other members of a family in the same Team and playing together for some years. In 1960 , 4 of them (sisters) played for Mysore State at the first National Championship (Priscilla, Elvera, Rita & Mae), and 3 of them - Elvera, Rita & Mae represented India in the 1960’s. As they look back, they all agree that though the going was tough - be it travel conditions, inadequate arrangements as they travelled the length and breadth of the country, to lack of encouragement & support; what motivated them was their joy to play for the glory of the State and for the glory of India. Their motto was : "Do or Die !! For … When the Great Scorer writes against your name, He’ll ask not whether you won or lost, but how you played the game. “ India Posts fittingly paid tribute to this great Veteran Hockey Player by releasing this Special Cover during National Sports Day 2022.
